Deadly Ramp Crashes
Leonard Price, a 66-year-old man from Manchester, was killed around 7 a.m. on February 9, 2023, in a deadly ramp crash on an Interstate 91 North off-ramp in Windsor. According to state police, Price lost control of his Chevrolet pickup truck near the HOV off-ramp (exit 38). The police closed off a portion of Route 75 under an overpass.
Price’s truck crashed into a concrete median barrier, traveled through the Poquonock Ave. intersection, and crashed into a concrete bridge abutment on the intersection’s opposite side. The police don’t know why Price lost control of his truck.
Why Do Ramp Crashes Happen?
Ramps should make connections between various road facilities safer, easier, and more convenient for drivers with no or little effect or delay on traffic. Unfortunately, the design or condition of some ramps might even contribute to accidents. While most ramp crashes are a result of driver negligence, factors that can contribute to ramp accidents include:
- Driving Too Slow on On-Ramps – On-ramps usually have low speed limits, which require drivers to be alert because they are moving into a high-speed highway. Drivers that fail to account for the higher speed traffic as they enter the highway could get into a serious crash.
- Speeding on Off-Ramps – Since ramps are usually curved and higher than ground level, speeding when entering a ramp can lead to the driver losing control of their vehicle, increasing the risk of crashing into a barrier wall or their vehicle rolling over.
- Rushing to an Exit – Unfortunately, many drivers have engaged in risky driving practices to avoid missing an exit. These dangerous driving practices, including speeding, improper turns, and aggressive driving, endanger the negligent driver and the lives of other road users.
The Importance Of Legal Help After Getting Injured In A Ramp Crash
When ramp crashes occur because of another person or entity’s negligent actions, they can be particularly hard to substantiate. Crashes on ramps typically occur in areas with constant moving traffic. In addition, these collisions happen quickly, which means that people may not be aware of them until it’s too late.
An experienced Somers roadside lawyer can investigate the accident thoroughly to determine what caused the ramp crash and hold the liable party accountable for their actions. The injured party may still be entitled to financial compensation for their damages even if the crash only involved their vehicle.
They may even be entitled to recover compensation if another driver was involved but fled the accident scene. A seasoned lawyer can inform injured parties of the best option to pursue based on their specific situation.
