Connecticut Truck Car Accident Blamed On Fog

Police in Connecticut say that fog may have contributed to a car and truck accident in the early hours of March 17 that left a Torrington man critically injured. The accident occurred at the intersection of Winsted Road and Kennedy Drive in Torrington at approximately 3:43 a.m. Police did not say if weather was also the reason that a Life Star helicopter was unable to respond to the scene.

According to police at the scene, the driver of a semi-tractor trailer was backing up across the intersection when a car struck its side. Images of the accident scene show the car with most of its roof sheared off. Police say that the truck driver was backing up after overshooting the intersection.

Firefighters arriving at the scene used hydraulic extraction equipment to free the car’s driver, and the 54-year-old area resident was rushed by paramedics to a medical facility in New Haven County with what was described as a serious head injury. He was reported to be in critical condition. The truck driver was uninjured.

Truck drivers operate heavy and cumbersome machines that are capable of causing catastrophic damage and injuries, and they owe all other road users a duty of care to remain vigilant and obey all traffic laws. When this duty is not met, personal injury attorneys may file lawsuits against them on behalf of clients who have been harmed due to those negligent actions. Litigation may also be initiated against trucking companies when accidents are caused by violations of federal safety regulations or inadequate maintenance.
