Fatal Crash On I-84 In West Hartford
On May 6, 2023, westbound lanes of I-84 were shut down between exits 40 and 41 due to a single-car crash, although eastbound traffic was unaffected. According to Connecticut State Police, the reason for this shutdown was a crash that occurred just before 6:30 a.m. Unfortunately, first responders pronounced a man from New Britain dead on the scene from his severe injuries in that accident on I-84 in West Hartford. State police say the motorist was 22-year-old Luis Daniel Colon.
Somehow, Colon lost control of his vehicle, a 2010 Toyota MPV, which traveled across three lanes of travel, across the right shoulder, and then crossed the exit 41 entrance ramp before colliding with the concrete sound barrier off the right side of the road. The vehicle sustained severe damage and was towed from the scene. The barrier was also damaged due to the crash. The ramp remained closed for several hours due to the investigation and reopened around 11:30 a.m.
Thankfully, no other vehicles were involved, and no one else was injured. Law enforcement is still unsure what caused Colon to lose control of his vehicle. The accident remains under investigation.
