Three tips for victims of hit-and-run accidents in Connecticut

Car crashes are stressful. It doesn't matter if the accident is a minor fender bender or a major collision; either process is likely to raise your stress levels. This is true especially when the party responsible for the accident leaves the scene.

Unfortunately, hit-and-run accidents are not uncommon in Connecticut. In fact, certain types of these accidents appear to be on the rise. A recent article in the Connecticut Post discussed reports of an increase in pedestrian hit-and-run accidents. According to the piece, Bridgeport Hospital and St. Vincent's Medical Center have both reported increases in pedestrian accidents.

Pedestrians hit by another vehicle that leaves the scene or drivers of another vehicle can both take proactive steps to help ease the process that follows. Three examples include:

  • Get to safety. If you are struck on the road or your vehicle is stopped in the middle of the street, move yourself to safety.
  • Call police. Once you are safe, contact the police. If needed, also request an ambulance for medical attention.
  • Document, document, document. Gather as much information as you can. If you got the license plate number, jot it down. If there were witnesses, get their contact information and their version of what happened. If a police report was filed, get a copy.

These are just a few of many steps that can be taken in these situations. Arguably, one of the most important steps is to contact legal counsel. An attorney can help review the details of your accident and work to hold the responsible party accountable for the hit-and-run accident, better ensuring your legal rights and remedies are protected.
