Two men and two juveniles were arrested in connection with the theft of two vehicles in West Haven on Feb. 4. The four were taken into custody after police allegedly observed them acting suspiciously in the parking lot of a Shop Rite supermarket.
According to West Haven police, officers were conducting video surveillance of the supermarket parking lot when they spotted the four defendants dropping off a vehicle that had been reported stolen in Hamden. The group then left the scene in a second stolen vehicle.
After confirming the first vehicle was stolen, police pursued the second vehicle into New Haven, where the defendants allegedly abandoned the car and fled on foot. They were apprehended a short time later.
Authorities charged a 19-year-old man with conspiracy, larceny and various motor vehicle charges. Another 19-year-old was charged with conspiracy, larceny and possession of narcotics. Both men are being held on bond. No information was released about the two juveniles due to their age.
Individuals convicted of larceny in Connecticut can face harsh consequences, including significant prison time and heavy fines. Anyone charged with a similar crime may wish to exercise their right to be represented by a criminal defense attorney. An attorney could protect a defendant's rights as they are questioned by police. They could also review the specifics of the case and recommend appropriate legal defense strategies. For example, surveillance footage used to link a defendant to an alleged crime could be grainy or dark, which could weaken its validity in court. Also, if police overstepped their authority while searching or arresting a defendant, charges could be lowered or dismissed.
