1 dead, 1 arrested in Connecticut car accident

A man is dead and a woman has been arrested following a serious car crash in Bristol, according to local sources. Connecticut authorities arrested a 24-year-old woman in connection to a car accident she caused in October that claimed the life of one of her passengers. Her first court appearance was scheduled for Feb. 1 of this year.

According to the police report, the woman was driving a van at the time of the crash, shortly before 8:30 a.m. Apparently, she crashed into the back of a septic tank truck that was parked at the time. A 68-year-old male traveling in the van with her was badly hurt and rushed to a local hospital. He was pronounced dead on Oct. 9, 2015.

The police investigation revealed the woman did not drive around the vehicle as she should have, and she was speeding at the time of the crash. She stands charged with failure to drive left of a parked vehicle, driving at unsafe speeds and negligent homicide. She was arrested but was later released on $10,000 bond. She is now awaiting trial.

If the criminal trial results in a conviction, the woman could face serious jail time for her role in the car accident that killed her passenger. In addition, the family of the deceased man is entitled under Connecticut law to file separate personal injury charges against her in civil court. Such a suit would make use of the evidence brought forth by police for the criminal trial in an attempt to illustrate how the woman contributed in a meaningful way to the fatal crash.
