Connecticut doctor accused of sexual assault by patient

More than four months after having a sexual assault complaint filed against him, a New London doctor is facing criminal charges. The alleged assault occurred at a Bank Street drug treatment clinic where the doctor worked.

Officials charged the doctor, a 58-year-old man, with fourth-degree sexual assault. The charges are the culmination of months of investigation, which commenced after the complaint was lodged against the doctor in June, reportedly. Officials said that they conducted interviews with employees and doctors at the clinic as well as the accused doctor himself. Ultimately, an arrest warrant was issued for the 58-year-old doctor.

Furthermore, a second patient reported that she was the victim of sexual assault committed by the doctor approximately one month before police detained the doctor. That patient alleges that the doctor inappropriately touched her. The patient also alleges that the nurses at the clinic were aware of the doctor's inappropriate behavior but could not effectively deter it.

According to authorities, the 58-year-old doctor received his medical license in 1986 after studying in Guadalajara, Mexico. Previously, he had worked for the Department of Corrections and a prison for women, reportedly.

The doctor denies the accusations brought against him, according to his lawyer. Irrespective of the outcome of this particular case, retaining a defense attorney was an important step of action for the accused doctor. For, criminal defense lawyers may advise individuals accused of sexual assault and other serious crimes of their rights, specified and inviolate, under the United States Constitution. Additionally, an attorney may place the prosecution's case under intense scrutiny, seeking areas of weakness. If the evidence or witness testimony substantiating the criminal charges does not pass muster, then prosecutors may have difficulties proving guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
